The Frederick Hanger House house was modified from an earlier 1870s house to its current Queen Anne style in 1889. The house belonged to Frederick and Frances Hanger. Frederick was the grandson of Little Rock's first family, Dr. Matthew Cunningham was the first physician and first mayor of Little Rock. Frederick's father, Peter Hanger was active in politics and served in Arkansas First Legislature and his mother was Matilda, the youngest daughter of the Cunninghams.

Frederick and Frances Hanger moved into the newly remodeled house Christmas Eve 1889 with their two young sons. The Hangers became known for the parties they hosted in their home. Frederick tragically as a result of an accident at one of his businesses (Arkansas Granite Company) in September, 1900. Frances remained in the house not remarrying until her death in in 1945. She became a writer and was involved in many society organizations in the community. She wrote a book of poems "From The Scrapbook of the Widow and the Bachelor" in 1911. She also became a journalist and wrote the society column for four different newspapers.

The house remained in the Hanger family until 1967 at which time it was purchased by Little Rock Housing Authority to save it from demolition. Beginning in 1971 a 26 year restoration was begun. Careful analysis was done to replicate the paint and wall coverings to match that of the home's glory days.

The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
