More Information:
The Newfoundland Railway was completed to Port Aux Basques in 1897 but the necessary docks were not completed until 1898. On June 30, 1898, the first passenger train arrived in Port aux Basques, and the SS Bruce departed for North Sydney shortly afterward with about 50 passengers.
In 1949, Newfoundland entered into Confederation and the railway was transferred to Canadian National Railways. Large dock renovations were required with extensive dual gauge trackage. By the mid-1960s, new railcar-capable ferries permitted the exchange of standard gauge railcars, requiring further expansion at the Port aux Basques terminal facilities. During that time, the Trans-Canada Highway was completed across Newfoundland. The new highway led to increased truck traffic (and tourists) which led to RORO (Roll-on / Roll-off) ferries. By 1988, the railway no longer operated.
The newest ferry, the MV Atlantic Vision, can hold about 530 cars.
