The north eastern region of Thailand (known as 'E-sarn') is a relatively poor and agricultural area of Thailand. It relies largely on rice, silk, and a few other regional exports for its economy. There are nineteen provinces in this region, each of which has a provincial capital city, and a capital city municipal council.
The small town hall offices for Roi-Et are near the centre of the town, and to the immediate east of the provincial admin offices. The building has a modern look, as witnessed by the English language sign above the entrance (fairly rare in this quiet town). I was unable to enter the building as the region had just experienced a few troubles from the 'Red Shirt' protests (who had destroyed by fire some other town halls in Esarn) of Thailand (early-mid 2010). There were police and barb wire still around the city. (Ok, not always a quiet town.)
The name of the town (and province) 'Roi-Et' is the Thai word for 101 (one hundred and one). This refers to the legendary times when Roi-Et was a major city, with the city having many gates and many dependent villages around—the total of all of these equalling 101. The region was part of the Kymer empire ~1,000 years ago. Between then and the recent era the province was isolated and economically self-sufficient. The current population of the city is approximately 40,000.
I could not find a website for the town government.
