In New Orleans, in the Lakeview district of the city, is the 17th Street canal. At the point where Hammond Highway crosses over the canal, on the eastern edge, is a vertical staff with lines marking feet.
This appears to be a totally analog measurement station. The USGS gauges nearest this location do not describe here. One station is toward the pumps that are located near the gate to Lake Pontchartrain. The other is for a location south of this one.
So, this is a simple analog gauge that provides a visual measurement of the water height.
While you are there, notice, that the water level is higher than the surrounding land.
RIVER GAUGE INFORMATION: This gauge is a vertical staff in the canal. The point where the levee was breached during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 is visible from this staff.
