In Boston, in the Kenmore section of the city, along Beacon Street, is a multi-story building that is the fraternity house for the Beta Chapter of the Theta Chi fraternity. This chapter is affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) across the Charles River in Cambridge.
The house is at 528 Beacon Street in Boston. Since the MIT campus is in Cambridge, members must walk over the Massachusetts Avenue bridge to get to classes. This is true with many of the fraternities associated with MIT. According to documentation on the chapter's web site, the chapter has been at this house since 1923. In 2009, the chapter completed the first phase of a major renovation to upgrade the house.
This chapter is particularly important to the history of the Theta Chi fraternity. It is the first 'branch' chapter in the fraternity. The fraternity was founded at Norwich University, by Frederick Nortonb Freeman and Arthur Chase in 1856. In 1901, Park Valentine Perkins transferred from Norwich to MIT. He soon gain several friends, and later he decided to petition to form a chapter. The petition was denied, but Perkins persisted and, Beta Chatper was initiated on December 13, in 1902. Over 100 years later, the chapter continues to represent Theta Chi on the campus of MIT and, since Alpha Chapter is now inactive, Beta Chapter is currently the oldest active chapter in the Theta Chi Fraternity, and claim to be one of the strongest and most active in the system. Since Beta Chapter's initiation, the Theta Chi fraternity has grown to one of the largest greek fraternities in the country, with chapters established on 218 college campusses in the United States of America and Canada.
