In Cambridge, within the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus, is the Sloan Automotive Laboratory. This laboratory is dedicated to research in propulsion and fuels.
The lab building is located in the main campus, about a block south of Vasser Street and through a tunnel under buildings facing Massachusetts Avenue, in Building 31. The best place to park is likely along Vassar Street. Public transportation by bus or Red Line is also pretty nearby.
As stated on the lab's web site, the objective is to "Contribute to future developments in automotive technology through fundamental and applied research on propulsion technology and fuels."
The lab was founded in 1929 by Professor C.F. Taylor, with a grant from Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., CEO of General Motors. It conducts research, with efforts by graduate students and staff, on propulsion technologies and fuels in the automotive, truck, and construction industry. Facilities include 12 test cells with engine blocks mounted in place, and several special equipment that includes fast response CO, CO2, and NOx analyzers, excimer laser and LIF imaging system, and a gas chromatograph. Currently there is a staff of about 12 people, and 30 or so graduate students at a time.
Typical research includes: engine and fuels research - including research in alternate fuels; oil and lubricant aftertreatment research; and before a transition to hydrogen technology research (research into near-term energy use while a transition to a hydrogen fuel-based system is implemented.
The research done at this lab have contributed to more efficient and better internal combustion engines, and fundamental research on alternate fuels behaviors.
