Tickhill buttercross. - posted by HitchinLookers

A buttercross is a sort of market cross dating from medieval times. It is a standard cross, but with the addition of circular steps at the bottom. Local producers of milk, eggs and butter would bring their wares here to sell. They would lay them out on the steps at the base of the cross.

Some buttercrosses have a roof over the top to protect the sellers and their goods from the weather. This one also has a rather nice weathervane on top too.
