This bandstand was part of the town council's plan for the construction of a public promenade along the right bank of the Gilão river beside Rua dos Cais (Pier Street), together with the purchase and setting up of a public lavatory, benches, street lamps, etc. It was commissioned from the 'Fundição do Ouro', a foundry in Porto and it was transported by ship from there to Olhão, just down the coast, where it arrived in early 1890. It is the focal point of a shaded walk from the Praça da República.
It is painted a silver colour and is in good condition. It is raised above the level of the promenade on a rendered stone plinth set in the middle of a water feature, with foliage and an outside metal railing. A narrow bridge provides support for the removable steps required for access to the terrace. There are fish and terrapins in the water, and fountains play continually.
One commemorative plaque in marble can be seen behind the foliage, 'A Sebastião ....... Musico Poeta Jornalista', but who was he?
