This gravestone is rather less remarkable than the man interred here. It fails to stand out in the graveyard here at all. There is information in the porch of the church about him and a description of how to find his grave. When you get near, there is a white post tucked neatly behind the headstone.
Description:
Blind Jack, the nickname of John Metcalf, was born in 1717 and lost his sight at the age of 6. He had a number of occupations before becoming a road builder, a most unlikely occupation for a man who had this particular handicap. He had a unique grasp of the engineering problems and the solutions to them as well as an individual but accurate method of costing the work that was to be undertaken. He died in Spofforth in 1810 at the age of 92 and is burried here in the graveyard of All Saint's Church. An internet search reveals lots of other information about this remarkable man.
