The Basra Memorial Wall is a brown, polished granite monument with many brass plaques to those who have died. The plaque reads:
'HONOURABLE AGE DOES NOT
DEPEND ON LENGTH OF DAYS, NOR
IS THE NUMBER OF YEARS A TRUE
MEASURE OF LIFE
WISDOM 4:8
In Memory of British personnel who have died on Operation TELIC
and those coalition personnel killed in Southern Iraq.'
Built by British soldiers from the 37 Armoured Engineer Squadron this memorial was later dismantled by them after standing outside the Headquarters of the Multi-National Division (South East) in Basra. It was built in 2006 then reconstructed here at the arboretum when it was moved.
There are 178 UK Service personnel commemorated on the memorial together with one MOD civilian and other Coalition Forces.
Behind the memorial are the Iraq/Afghanistan Willows which is an avenue of Weeping Willows alongside the Darbyshire Ditch. They are all individually sponsored and dedicated to servicemen and women who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
