Probably already in the late Middle Ages was built on top of the chapel of the Virgin Mary, apparently from the miners, who here has called Lord Burian Zabka of Limberk, in 1544, survived to become 1658. The existence of the well near the top and the ruins of the massive prehistoric mounds will inevitably give rise to a series of tales.
According to legend, but first mentioned in 1665 to work in Jesuit Bohuslav Balbín Diva Montis Sancti, here in the 13th Century (1241) people were holed up in a large raid by the Tartars. However, suffered from lack of water, so they prayed to the Mother of God and the intercession of the spring and there gushed a huge storm forced the Tatars to retreat. Archaeological finds, however, do not provide any evidence of such events. This legend was probably under the influence of the new Turkish threat to Europe, although many researchers do not exclude even the miraculous origin of the ancient theme (the miraculous rescue of a hill surrounded by legions of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman historians describe Cassius Dio and Paulus Orosius).
In 1567 it was first mentioned as a pilgrimage Caves, then pilgrimage but have not yet associated with that legend.

Old iconography shows the Virgin Mary of Hstyn as the site patron - in spreaded cloak, beneath which hides a number of believers. The oldest painting had been destroyed by lutheran Lord Vaclav of Bítov, owner of the domain in the early 17th century. In 1655, donated Lady Mary, wife of John of Rottal, a new image for Hostýn chapel. This time it was the Our Lady of Victory standing on a crescent. Today this image is located in a church in Bystrica. 1658 John of Rottal expanded the existing chapel, leaves of adding two side chapels. In the context of Marian devotion, which was promoted by Counter-Reformation Houses including Rottals, who owned estates here in Bystrice post-Bílá hora period, with Hostýn legend spread awareness. Current form it got from John Francis Beckovský Cross, who brought together several legends.

Grandson of Count John leaves to build a large temple Hostýn, 1721 is laid the foundation stone. Construction was completed by 1748. For the needs of pilgrims was established inn, the building for three priests, sexton and organist. The whole complex was surrounded by a wall. On 24th September 1769 church was struck by lightning and burned down but was repaired within two years. In 1779 the reforms of Joseph II moved the seat of the church administration to nearby Rusava and in 1784 prohibited pilgrimages. The temple was abandoned, including the dismantling of the roof.

During 19th century began attempts to restore the holy shrine, the authorization came only in 1840. From 1841-1845 the church was restored and 1883 were built new homes for monks. 1895 was created society Matice svatohostýnská, which bought the hill, so as to prevent improper interference in the vicinity of the church. She had also built a large hostel and a guesthouse. 1898 was built on top of Hostýn stone tower, the foundation stone was laid a year earlier (1897), the top visited by Emperor Franz Joseph II .. In 1909 began construction of stone staircase, which connects the main temple in the chapel of the miraculous spring. Staircase to 250 degrees and is 242 m long, the journey can divide into three parts.
