Oliver Twist is the title character of Charles Dickens' second major work. In the book, Oliver escapes from a workhouse and meets a gang of pickpockets in London. The novel is one of Dickens's best-known works, and has been the subject of numerous film and television adaptations. The original plaque mentioning that this is Oliver Twist was removed or stolen. The name of the statue is clearly marked on maps of the grounds.
