A small walking trail around the Prairie Supervisor's Office and Welcome Center displays samples of the various plants and flowers found throughout the remainder of the 19,000 acre National Tallgrass Prairie. The trailhead is decorated with a large monument with a quote attributed to the American ecologist Aldo Leopold (1887 – 1948), who is best known for is posthumous work "The Sand County Almanac."

The monunument's quote is simply descriptive of prairies:
"Prairie was, in fact, a community of plants and animals so organized as to build, through the centuries, the rich soil which now feeds us."
