In Boston, along the Charles River Esplanade portion of the Charles River Reservation, is a building with sail boats on it, with docks and piers in a cove with sail boats. This facility is known as Community Boating, Inc.

A green sign on the building states that it is the oldest public sailing program in the country. It was started in 1937 as a summer program for the children of the old West End section of Boston and was originally located near Massachusetts General Hospital. Later, it expanded its program offerings to people of all ages, and is now one of the largest of its kind in the country.

According to Community Boating, Inc.'s web site, the fleet is as follows (June 2010):
66 Centerboard Mercuries
10 Keel Mercuries
2 UAP Keel Mercuries
6 Rhodes 19s
4 Sonars
13 Lasers
19 420s
7 Sit-on-Top Single Kayaks
4 Sit-on-Top Double Kayaks
A few assorted Sit-Inside Kayaks
6 Bic Techno 293 Windsurfers
A Fleet of Assorted Hi-Fly Windsurfers
Other Assorted Windsurfers

Getting to see this facility is a bit tricky, since there is no parking right at the facility. There is some on-street parking in the Beacon Hill-Back Bay area (watch out for Residential Permit Only signs), then walk on David Mugar Way, cross on the Arthur Fiedler Footbridge, then walk through the Music Oval at the Hatch Shell and follow the path (keep the river to your left) to the facility on your left.

Another place to view the facility is from the Longfellow Bridge. There, you can see the boats sailing in the lake known as the Charles River Basin. Near sunset is a particularly pretty time to watch them.
