This local legend is detailed on a plaque by the village pub. It reads:
'The Parish Well
In use until the coming of piped water in 1936.
Legend has it, when the church steeple fell around 1620, the spire penetrated the earth at this point and formed a well.'
The plaque is attached to the public footpath sign and the well remains are seen by a scorched patch of grass in front of it by the road.
After the steeple fell the church had a wooden spire and belfry added in 1866.
What's the Real Story?:
The steeple did fall in 1625 and damaged the nave and chancel of the church. Though the nave was repaired quickly there were long disputes over the chancel's rebuilding costs. The New College and its lessee Thomas Martin blamed the parishioners for not donating enough money. The parishioners blamed Martin for taking timber, lead and tiles from the chancel for himself.
