Inside you can see nice 18th century hand painted tiles, with images of the Battle of Ourique, a very important portuguese historic event related to the founding of Portugal.
It is so important that the portuguese coat of arms still shows five castles representing the five arab "kings" defeated at this battle by portuguese soon to be king D. Afonso Henriques.
[PT] A Basílica Real de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (ou de Castro Verde) é um templo imponente que marca de forma bem visível o núcleo urbano da vila. O seu altar - mor é revestido a talha dourada e o interior coberto por riquíssimos painéis de azulejos do século XVIII que retratam a Batalha de Ourique, episódio lendário ligado à fundação da nacionalidade.
O título de Basílica Real foi concedido por D. João V em homenagem à vitória do primeiro rei de Portugal – D. Afonso Henriques – sobre os cinco reis Mouros, ocorrida no dia 25 de Julho, dia de Santiago, corria o ano de 1139.
Na Basílica Real de Castro Verde pode também visitar o Tesouro da Basílica, núcleo museológico de arte sacra, onde se podem apreciar algumas das alfaias religiosas mais importantes do concelho, com especial destaque para a Cabeça-Relicário de São Fabião (Casével) e a Custódia da própria Basílica.
