This Lavoir is called "Rio da Fonte" and lies in a little town called Cabeço de Montachique, Portugal (25 Km away from Lisbon).

I was born and raised here and I've always heard the stories about my grand-grand-parents generation. Most of those who didn't work in agriculture sustained themselves and their families by picking up, washing and delivering the wealthier classes' clothes in Lisbon. It had been like that for ages, since the beginning of the 20th century.
There are still a couple more places like this one. Some had to be moved away because of buildings and highways and lost all their beauty. Some are in pretty bad shape, vandalized and abandoned after so many years. The "Rio da Fonte" surrounding area has been restored a couple years ago, as you can see by the pictures. They kept the original stuff: stones, tanks and the water taps and added a new roof. The new school is being built very near and this wash-house will long over the years and keep telling these stories...
