St. Michaels church is one of the larger municipal churches in this region, surviving from the middleages, a fine example of fifteenth century Gothic. It was built between 1406 and 1446.
It got its name from the Archangel Michael who was revered by the bishop of Utrecht as the patron saint of the city of Zwolle.
Already in the 8th century a little church was build on the place that we now know as the Great Church Square. The church was destroyed several times, but rebuilt each time and the building of the present church started in the 15th century and it still dominates the city centre as it is very important for Zwolle in religious and tourist way.
The present church replaces the earlier romanesque church on the site; c. 1200. The church of St. Michael is of the "three naves", Du: "hal"-church, type, having three naves, all of one height, in contrast with many other churches which have a high central nave and lower aisles. It is 215 ft. long, 110 ft. broad and 65 ft. high.
