Elk migrate from the southern portion of the Greater Yellowstone region to this area during the fall to live off of the grassy flat plains during the long, snowy winter months. The single largest herd of bison, numbering around 1000 animals, also use this range for the winter season. Pronghorn antelope, mule deer, bighorn sheep and trumpeter swans can also be seen in the area. While wolves and grizzly bears are rare, they have been spotted.
The Boy Scouts of America collect the elk antler sheds every year and auction them off - returning 80% of the profits back to the refuge to feed, research and manage the herd to assure its survival.
