ENG: The small church of S. Miguel do Castelo was built in the 13th century. However, according to tradition, this church would have been built in the 12th century by Count Dom Henrique (Henry of Burgundy), where he would have baptised his son, the 1st King of Portugal Dom Afonso Henriques.
Of Romanic style and reduced dimensions, this church reveals great simplicity in terms of decoration. Inside, under the floor of this church lie buried the great warriors of the nation’s founding period.
The church became severely run-down during the early 19th century, but was later restored in 1874 and 1940. In 1910, it was classified as a National Monument.
PT: A primeira referência à Igreja de São Miguel data de 1216 pela Colegiada de Guimarães, calculando-se que tenha sido essa a data da sua fundação. Foi sagrada pelo Arcebispo de Braga em 1239.
Em estilo românico, é uma igreja de pequenas dimensões e simplicidade arquitectónica mas com elementos decorativos de referência como os que se vêem nos frisos do Portal, num dos arcosólios e no arco triunfal da capela mor.
A história desta Igreja está muito ligada à fundação da nacionalidade, dizendo a lenda que foi aqui baptizado D. Afonso Henriques, que viria a ser o primeiro rei de Portugal. Apesar de uma inscrição numa lápide datada de 1664 referir este facto, ele é contraditório com a data presumível da sua fundação, já no reinado de D. Afonso II.
No interior, existem várias sepulturas de guerreiros nobres.
A Igreja de São Migel está classificada como Monumento Nacional.
