[EN] l'arc municipal passe pour le plus ancien des arcs romains de Narbonnaise. Sur le passage de la grande voie des Alpes, il marquait l'entrée de Glanum. Ses proportions parfaites (12,5 m de longueur, 5,5 m de largeur et 8,6 m de hauteur) et la qualité exceptionnelle de son décor sculpté dénotent une influence grecque.
Sur les côtés de cet arc municipal (porte d'entrée de la ville), on peut voir deux couples de Gaulois enchainés, symbole de la domination des Romains sur ces derniers. Ce monument se trouve à proximité du mausolée.
La construction de cet édifice ne semble pas liée à un événement militaire particulier, alors que cela était de coutume dans l'Antiquité. Les parties hautes ne nous sont malheureusement pas parvenues. Elles ont été détruites et l'on peut imaginer que l'arc avait alors une majesté qui l'a quelque peu abandonné. Selon certains spécialistes, ses parties hautes «doivent être restituées avec une forme tabulaire, pour équilibrer les parties basses ; on pourrait y inclure le motif d'un fronton en triangle».

Glanum's southern gate, which looks a bit like a triumphal arch and must have been one before it was incorporated in the town walls, glorifies Rome and shows the deplorable fate of those who resist its armies. The monument was erected between 10 and 25 CE. The flowers on the arch may indicate the abundance brought to Gaul by the Romans.
One of the most striking scenes on the arch of Glanum is a native woman who laments her fate together with a chained man. They are carried away to the triumph of an unknown Roman general. Notice, on the photo to the left, how the artist has indicated that this couple is forcibly separated.
