Holker Hall was first owned by the Preston family in 1500s. By marriage the hall became a home for the Cavendish family from late 1700s onwards. But in 1871 a fire broke out and ruined the west wing. This was rebuilt in red sandstone by Paley and Austin, who incorporated the Cavendish coat of arms above the door.
The Cavendish family emblem is a snake, and their motto Cavendo tutus is a pun and can be translated as 'Safety through caution' or, proverbially, 'Look before you leap'.
There is an entrance fee to see this part of the hall.
Free parking.
