On the initiative of the Government, the creation of RTP - Portuguese Radio Television Limited is made December 15, 1955. It was therefore a limited company with capital tripartite between the government, broadcasters and private individuals.
Emissions experimental RTP (later known as RTP1) began in 1956, from the popular Fair in Lisbon.
However, regular broadcasts only would start from March 7, 1957.

On 20 October 1959, RTP became a member of the EBU - European Broadcasting Union - and in the mid-60s of the twentieth century came to be broadcast around the country.
On December 25, 1968 Christmas is celebrated with the creation of a second channel, RTP2.
Later, two regional channels began operations in the Azores and Madeira in the 70s:
RTP Madeira, on August 6, 1972;
RTP Azores on August 10, 1975.
After April 25, 1974, the status of the operating company of broadcasting has changed. In 1975, RTP was nationalized, becoming the public company Radio Television Portugal, Decree-Law No. 674-D/75 of December 2.
In 1976 RTP opens new premises located at Avenida 05 October in Lisbon.
RTP began regular broadcasts in color on March 7, 1980, after some technical experience, however much of the population still did not have color devices.
On June 10, 1992, started transmissions of RTP International.
On August 14, 1992, RTP became a limited company wholly publicly owned - the Broadcasting Portuguesa, SA.
On January 7, 1998, began regular broadcasts of the RTP Africa, for the inhabitants of speaking, such as Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe.
The May 11, 2000, RTP - along with the Portuguese Broadcasting (RDP) and the Agency LUSA - becomes part of the limited company with exclusively public capital called Global Portugal, SGPS, SA.
The Global Portugal was extinguished in August 22, 2003, having been made to restructure the corporate sector of the state in the audiovisual area. Among other changes, became the former Portuguese Broadcasting, S. A., limited liability company wholly publicly owned, a new holding company, named Radio and Television of Portugal, SGPS, S. A.. It was also created a limited company with exclusively public capital designated Portuguese Broadcasting - Public Service Television, S. A..
On January 5, 2004, the RTP2 gave rise to a new channel named two:.
In 2007, RTP celebrates its 50 years of emissions in Portugal.
The new complex has studios Chelas using current technology and modern ready to start issuing the DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) and also a huge car outside fully equipped to broadcast in High Devinition Television HDTV (High Definition Television). This complex has four studios, 800, 400, 200 and 100 square meters fully equipped.
On March 19, 2007, 2: resumed its original designation, RTP2, with a new identity.
RTP's first issue in high definition on channel RTP HD during the Olympics in Beijing.
