The Gilbert Elementary School (a.k.a. The Alamo) was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 16, 1980. The building still stands on the Southwest corner of Gilbert Rd. and Elliot Rd. in downtown Gilbert, AZ. The building has been a town icon for over 90 years. It was built by Lescher & Kibbey in a 'mission/spanish revival' style. The building was used as an elementary school until 1977 when it was abandoned.
In 1979 the Gilbert Historical Society was incorporated in to a non-profit organization and gained ownership of the building thanks to contributions from Otto and Edna Neely. The Gilbert Historical Society houses it headquarters in the building and on May 15, 1982, the building was reopened to the public as the Gilbert Historical Museum.
The museum features exhibits relating to Gilbert's history including a classroom to show the initial use of the building.
