Rebuilding of the Mother Church in Albufeira commenced in 1782 after the Old Church, converted from an Arab mosque, was destroyed by earthquake in 1755. It was consecrated on 15th July 1800 by the Bishop of the Algarve, D.Francisco Gomes de Avelar and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
Of Neo-classical design, the single nave of the church is 40m long, 11.2m wide and 18.5m high, there are four side chapels dedicated to St.Peter, Our Lady of Fatima, St.Louis and The Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1868 the altars were coated with gold and the last chapel on the right had its dedication changed to the Blessed Sacrament. The statue of the Immaculate Conception over the altar is 2.4m high and is thought to be 18th century Italian. It has as a backdrop a painting by Samora Barros Albufeirense. Either side are images of St.Vincent of Albufeira and St.Joseph, Woodworker.
The bell tower is 28m high dates from 1869. It contains a ring of eight bells tuned to Fmajor but only three are hung in the typical Portuguese fashion, the rest are hung inside the tower. The bells are reached by a spiral staircase of 72 steps.
The whole building was restored and fitted with a new stone altar. The presbytery was given two paintings by Alvaro Mota and by Sousa, scenes from the life and martyrdom of St.Vincent.
