The memorial is a bronze plaque attached to a rock near the Cades Cove Loop Road across from the Missionary Baptist Church. The CCC camp was located in the field farther from the road.

Marker text:
In Honor of the
Civilian Conservation Corps
1933 – 1942
whose hands built the roads, trails, bridges,
campgrounds and picnic areas in
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.
“If you seek their monument, look about you.”
Dedicated September 27, 2008

Lieutenant H.F. Gray with Sergeants St. John and Shiveley, along with 15 enlisted corpsmen, were ordered to establish a permanent camp in Tennessee. These men arrived at the Cades Cove camp site on October 21, 1933.

Twenty eight experienced woodsmen from Company 1459 in Gatlinburg joined the group in September. All lived in tents initially. When 175 recruits arrived from Camp Dix, New Jersey on November 21, carpenters had begun to erect barracks and a recreation hall. By January 1934, the barracks had been completed and electricity provided for lighting.

The Cades Cove camp successfully built fire trails, roads, dams, and bridges. A stone quarry was established and the camp site and vicinity was enhanced through stonework and landscaping. Recreational attractions included a swimming pool and baseball field.
