Sundial on the Ecomusée de la Sainte Baume, France - Sundials on Waymarking.com

The Ecomusée de la Sainte Baume provides information, accommodation and support for hikers and school groups exploring the the St Baume massif. There is a prominant vertical declining sundial on front of the hotel. The dial declines about 20° east of west and the meridian line is not quite vertical indicating a longitude correction. The lines look correct but the gnomon is not as it is mounted in the meridian plane rather than canted to allow for the wall declination.

The massif of Sainte Baume is a continuation of the mountain range that includes Mt Sainte Victoire to the west. Sainte Baume is slightly higher, the highest mountain in Bouche de Rhone.

The Ecomusée is across the road from the Hotellerie de la Sainte Baume. This is run by the Dominicans to serve pilgrims climbing to the famous cave "La Grotte Marie Madeline". Sainte Baume is "Holy Cave" in French. High on Sainte Baume mountain is the natural cave where Mary Magdalene is said to have spent the last 30 years of her life. The Dominicans have cared for this pilgrimage site since 1295.

We came to hike on the mountain. The trails start just east of the base camp, the Ecomusée and Hotellerie. It is a fine hike through the woods, up to past the cave sanctuary to the summit ridge. On the ridge is a the little chapel of St Pilon. This is an interesting area for many reasons.
