This sculpture named 'Hiroshima' was designed by Ronald Rae in 1988. It is made from 470 million year old Scottish granite.

The plaque reads as follows:
'HIROSHIMA
Ronald Rae 1988
Ronald Rae's hand carved 470 million year old Scottish Granite Memorial does not invite admiration of heroism or self sacrifice for others.

This nameless, pathetic, scarcely human form conveys only the appalling history of innocent men, women and children suddenly extinguished by nuclear bombs. Ronnie is also remembering those today who die in the world's continuing conflicts.'

It was of course, Hiroshima and Nagasaki who suffered the devastating blows from the nuclear bombs which eventually, but not immediately, ended the war in the Far East. It is this which is remembered foremost today as a constant reminder of what nuclear warfare can do.

But, without the atomic bombs the world could have been a different place. America's next step in World War II in the Far East was to send millions of troops into Japan to certain mass-death. Japan also would have continued to sacrifice their own civilians and their own troops with American advancement.

It is also worth bearing in mind that just before the atomic bombs were dropped a mass-murder of every FEPOW was planned on orders of the Emperor.

Who is right? It's the chicken or the egg.
