This popular figure appeared in the 1971 Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) book 'The Lorax', and later (1972) in a musical film of the same name based on the book. The Lorax is perhaps the world's most famous fictional environmentalist. In the book, the Lorax battles the evil Once-ler (who is said to represent greedy corporate polluters) in an effort to save the Truffula Trees from extinction.
The Lorax "speaks for the trees" - the message carried in the book is one of caution, highlighting the possibility of eventual permanent destruction of the environment, with a closing message of "UNLESS".
This sculpture, along with three other popular sculptures based on the work of Dr. Seuss, is located in the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden (
