A forgotten piece of history stands on the side of SH.3. near Piopio, the ruins of the old schoolhouse of Paemako District.

A small sign on the country roadside is the only thing to remind us that this was once a local school. The sign reads Paemako School 1899 - 1924. The old schoolhouse ruin is still standing, looking more like an old farm shed. The schoolroom windows, multi-sash, are clearly recognised as those used on an old school building in New Zealand.
Not a lot is known about the history, but a Mr E.E. Funke was reappointed as a teacher in 1916.
