Brewing in Brno has a long tradition. The earliest reports of Brno-city already refer about brewing in this region. In 1243 King Wenceslas I granted a range of privileges to the town, including the right to brew beer. In 1323 Queen Elisabeth Richeza founded a Cistercian monastery at Staré Brno, which began to run a brewery two years later.
In 19th century, together with the technical development started the progress in the brewing industry; small manufacture breweries stopped their operation and new ones were coming into existence, but this time they were very modern and technically equipped breweries. In 1872, the Mandel and Hayek family company came into existence and bought the land where Starobrno brewery is located today. Beer production in the new brewery expanded gradually and thanks to further extensive constructing and implementing new technical innovations, the brewery was able to produce 236.000 hl of beer at the end of the 19th century.
Since 1947, the brewery has kept on growing and increasing its production capacity till it reached the current output of 700.000 hl. In the course of the last few years, a gradual modernisation of the production equipment was carried out. The main changes came up after 1994 when BBAG Austrian Brewing Company took over the business. The fusion between BBAG and Heineken Group in 2003 allowed establishing of the most important brewing company in Middle Europe.
In 2009, Starobrno Brewery produced more than one million hectoliters of beer, for the first time in its history. Next to the standard production, the brewery presents annually a special batch of green beer. It is distributed only on one day in a year, on Maundy Thursday. The Czech term for this Christian holy day is "Green Thursday" ("zelený ctvrtek") and the unusual color of the beer is inspired by this feast.
