The theatre was builded according to design of architect Antonín Balšánek and it was opened on December 11, 1909. In the course of more then centenary of its existence, this theatre has been one of the most prestigious cultural institution in the region and its productions have won numerous successes not only on the home stage, but also on tours and at festivals staged throughout the country as well as abroad. Having undergone renovation in recent years, the theatre has regained its original splendid Art Nouveau appearance. Apart from the Town Theatre, the company appears on the stage of a theatre called Komorní scéna Anežky Ceské and during the summer months in the courtyard of the Pardubice Chateau and at the Kunetická Hora Castle. The theatre has a rich repertory ranging from fairy tales to musicals, dramas and comedies. The East Bohemian Theatre organizes the GRAND Laughter Festival. Attracting huge audiences (over 100 thousand spectators annually), the Pardubice Theatre is the most frequently visited single-company theatre in the Czech Republic (Prague theatres excluded).
