The historical society was founded in 1952, and is housed on an old courthouse building.
The society runs two museums: The Calaveras County Museum and the Red Barn Museum. The headquarters are in the former.
The museum is in an old courthouse were you can see the courtroom and judge's chamber. The courthouse is hidden by the constructed facade of the Hall of Records (completed in 1893).
Besides the museum, the historical society has a research area. Research fees are $15 per hour; (the first 1/2 hour is free). Copies are $0.50 each (The 1st one is $1.00).
