The area of today's Republic square in the centre of Pardubice undergoes distinct changes during last century. The photo from 1900 depicts the river Chrudimka, which ran at these times directly through the center of today's square. A few years later the river was regulated and diverted out of the centre. Tvelwe years later, in 1912, an annex to the St. Bartholomew Church was builded (the building approximately in the centre of the picture with high steeple). In 1914 - 1917 was builded the building of Municipal Savings Bank and in 1925 building of General Management of Posts and Telegraphs (two building from right covering today the view at Green Gate - high tower behind them). On the left new hotel Grand was builded in 1931 according to design of famous Czech architect Josef Gocar. Even the place from the picture was taken in 1900 changed. In thes times there was nothing here. A new theatre was builded here just six years after in 1906. Nevertheless still one can easily recognize the place according to famous historic dominants of Pardubice - from the right high Green Tower, St. Bartholomew Church with high steeple and Castle of Pardubice in the centre.
