St Veran is probably the sundial capital of the world with over 36 sundials. Many are historical, like the sundials of Zarbula. Some are quite recent like the sundials by Remi Potey.

In 2008 Rémi Potey painted a sundial featuring St Tropez in St Veran, Queyras, Hautes Alpes. This north facing sundial is on a private residence on the main street of St Veran. Like many of Potey's sundials, here the painting is more important than the sundial. The painting tells the story of St Tropez, depicting a headless saint in a drifting boat with a dog and a rooster. The sundial shows only two afternoon hour lines. The gnomon is up and to the left as expected for a northwest sundial.

The legend of Saint Tropez relates that a Roman officer named Torpez was beheaded on Nero’s orders in Pisa in 68 AD for being a Christian. The body was packed into a rotten boat and set adrift with a dog and a rooster to devour his remains. His headless corpse washed up intact at the town on the French Cote d'Azure named in his honour, as their patron saint.
Motto: “Ad Jusque Fidelis” (Always Faithful) may refer to the dog.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
