When the mines were active a large dam wall of waste stone was built across the valley to regulate the flow for the dressing floor downstream.

A popular walker's track nowadays crosses the dam. No water is kept behind the dam, due to three large concrete pipes letting the water through. The track is called the Duke's New Road.
