Lead mining stopped in 1880 and the smelt mill ceased operation shortly after. The long flues running just below the surface, led from the furnace to this chimney. In total there are 1.7 km of flues.

The chimney was repaired by the Earby Mines Research Group in second half of twentieth century, as it is a prominent landmark and monument to the previous industry of the area. All around are mine entrances, ruined buildings and spoil heaps.
