Suomen ja koko Pohjoismaiden ensimmäinen sähkövalo syttyi Finlaysonin suuressa kutomosalissa Plevnassa jo vuonna 1882. Keksinnön nopea leviäminen Tampereelle oli Finlaysonin tehtaanomistajan vanhimman pojan Carl von Nottbeckin ansiota. Hän työskenteli Edisonin palveluksessa 1870–luvun lopulla, eli juuri silloin kun Edison teki käänteen tekevän keksintönsä. Edisonin rakentaessa ensimmäistä sähkölaitosta New Yorkiin von Nottbeck sai uhkarohkealta tuntuneen idean: miksei rakennettaisi sähkövalaistusta myös Finlaysonille?

Suuresta kutomosalista valaistiin sähkövalolla aluksi vain toinen puoli, toiselle puolelle jätettiin aiemmin käytössä ollut kaasuvalo. Kutomosaliin asennettiin yhteensä 150 hehkulamppua. Yhden lampun teho vastasi kuitenkin vain kahdeksan kynttilän valoa, joten lamput asennettiin aina pareittain. Johdot olivat ”yksinkertaisella puuvillalla eristettyjä” kuparijohtoja, jotka kulkivat tehdassalin seiniin ja kattoon kiinnitettyjä koukkuja pitkin. Koukut valmistettiin puusta tehtaan puusepänverstaassa. Sähkö saatiin kahdesta 110 voltin tasavirtadynamosta.

Juhlava koevalaistus järjestettiin 15.3.1882 ja tilaisuutta oli kutsuttu todistamaan joukko arvovaltaisia tamperelaisia sekä asennustöissä mukana olleet miehet. Vieraiden joukossa uusi keksintö herätti hämmästystä, mutta kaikki myönsivät sen edut kaasu- tai öljylamppuihin verrattuna. Sähkövalo oli kirkkaampi kuin kaasuvalo ja valaisi tasaisemmin, mutta rasitti silmiä vähemmän.

The first electric light in Northern Europe was installed 125 years ago in the weawing shed of Finlayson factory in Tampere - thanks to the initiative of Carl von Nottbeck. (See the picture:
(visit link) Carl was the eldest son of Wilhelm von Nottbeck who owned the Finlayson factory. Carl was an engineer and worked for Thomas Alva Edison´s factory in the U.S.A. at the beginning of 1880´s.
