Enthroned high up on the Liebfrauenberg, above the roofs of Rankweil, is the Basilica «of Our Dear Lady», a castle and pilgrimage church. Its battlements afford impressive panoramic views over the upper Rhine Valley, into Switzerland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Voralberg Alpine Region. The origins of this pilgrimage church date back to the Middle Ages, to a fortified church with a ring wall and cemetery founded by the Bishops of Chur around 750. In 1657/58 the baroque master builder, Michael Beer, built the «Loreto Chapel», the centre of pilgrimage.
