The coat of arms features a dove holding an olive branch at its center. The coat of arms is topped with the Papal Tiara, the three-tiered jeweled papal crown. The Papal Tiara is a common element for the personal coats of arms for Popes and was present all all until the current Pope Benedict XVI who has altered heraldic custom and used mitre and pallium instead. The other common element shown in this coat of arms is the crossed keys with symbols of the cross on the blade of the key.
The location of the coat of arms is symbolic as one looks east to Rome and below the coat of arms is a mosaic of St. Peter again symbolizing as one looks to Rome. (The east entrance has the coat of arms for Cardinal Glennon and a mosaic of St. Louis).
Pope Pius XII beatified Philippine Duchesne in 1940 and she was canonized by Pope John Paul II on July 3, 1988.
