The 2,230 acre Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge, located on the former site of the U.S. Army's Fort Devens Sudbury Training Annex, contains a diverse mixture of forest, fields and wetlands. Opened officially for visitors in 2005, the refuge has 10 miles of pleasant walking trails, ideal for observing wildlife.
A new visitor center, expected to be completed by the summer of 2010
is still undergoing improvements, will provide educational and informational resources to all those who wish to explore the refuge. At the present time, the newly constructed road leading to the visitor's center is closed to traffic, but parking and an informational kiosk (trail maps available) can be found near the main entrance to the refuge on Hudson Street. For those who wish to see the new visitor center, it can be reached by walking a short distance up the new road.
Funding for the new visitor center was made available, in part, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The coordinates provided for this waymark were taken at the new visitor center. The main entrance to the Assabet National Wildlife Refuge on Hudson Road can be found at N 42 23.699 W 071 28.132.
