Näsinmäen hautausmaa cemetary was built in 1789. It is one of the oldest cemetaries in Finland that is separated from the church.

Althought at first when Cristianity came thet began to bury their deads under the church floors below and around the church. This happend also in Porvoo cathedral area. That region was, however, narrow, rocky and steep and therefore it wasn't at all compatible with the purpose. Master of Arts Goran Selén notes in booklet "Näsi hill cemetery 200 years"
"The Church Hill, had very little soil, and sometimes the spring floods washed away the soil around the chests, when the bones of the dead floated in the streets below, where dogs and pigs, they are dragged through the streets. The situation was quite spooky."
So it was quite right that the Porvoo in 1789 had a new cemetery, Näsi hill cemetery.
The graveyard of history, has expanded several times (1868, 1894, 1927, 1939, 1958 and 2006) and today consists of approximately 12.8 ha built on the graveyard. Cemetery of the environment of the total surface area of approximately 29.4 ha and is going to have 3.8 hectares more.
It is really hard to estimate how many graves there is but tens of thousands...and about 500 per year by the 2030.
