Up to 1842 forests of large Kauri still grew along the shores of the Lucas and Hellyers creeks. Most of the Kauri were felled and rafted to Auckland sawmills, for there was a constant demand for timber to build the expanding town.
Wherever there were large Kauri, there was also Kauri gum. The early settlers sent samples back to England & it proved to be an excellent product to manufacture varnishes. Digging for gum became in itself a large industry, hundreds of tons of Kauri gum was transported through the Upper Waitemata Harbour to waiting ships at Auckland's wharves for the trip to England.
This old tractor outside the Kauri Gum Store is a memory of bygone days.
