The Site of the
Cavendish Home of
LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY

"...it is and ever must be, hallowed ground to me." L.M.M.

Lucy Maud Montgomery was brought up by her maternal grandparents, Alexander and Lucy Macneill. She came here as a small child when her mother, Clara Macneill Montgomery died, and this was her home from 1876 - 1911.
It was here she wrote ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, ANNE OF AVONLEA, KILMENY OF THE ORCHARD, and THE STORY GIRL, as well as hundreds of short stories and poems.
The 'hallowed ground' surrounding the cellar site of the farmhouse, the old trees, lanes gardens, and flowers on it, gives visitors a real sense of the author, the love she had for her Cavendish home, and the inspiration for her writing.
John Macneill, a great-grandson of Alexander, to whom this land was passed down, was born and still lives in his grandfather's house (the white house at the end of the lane). He and his wife Jennie have restored this site and carefully tend it.

There are various other signs around the farmhouse site with old pictures and quotes from Lucy Maud Montgomery.
"I consider it a misfortune to love any place as I love this old homestead... the agony of parting from it is intolerable. I love this old home deeply... and I love Cavendish."
"Oh beloved old place... Have not old homesteads souls that cling to them until they crumble to dust?"
