Two photos from Winnipeg TV Stations from Aug 24/09:
On Aug 21, Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation said "River bank instability has compromised the structural integrity of the structure" and "there is a significant likelihood of failure."
Technically, scour (and insufficient inspections) was the cause. Scour which means “water move soil” is essentially high water flows removing the soil around bridge foundations. If the exposed length of piling is too great, there may be some buckling of the piles. With a spread footing, the water flow may undermine and damage the bridge.
As of March 2010, the bridge is still under repair.
