Balaton's National Park - Buffalo reservation - National Parks of the World on Waymarking.com

Covering a marshy area of approximately 30 hectares dotted by shrubbery, tussocks, reed beds and islets, this unique buffalo reservation greets visitors with walking paths and a herd of genuine Hungarian grey cattle.

Following World War II the small number of buffaloes left was kept and reared in the open air in Balatonnagyberek. Later the Kápolnapuszta State Farm was given permission to collect the remaining stock and move the 40-50 strong herd to Zimánypuszta, an ideal piece of land for rearing buffalo by the Little Balaton (Kis-Balaton). The herd was moved to its present home in 1976. Since 1997 the area has been part of the Balaton Uplands National Park (Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park).
