The statue of "Our Lady, Queen of Peace" stands 34-feet tall on the grounds of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in New Castle, Delaware. She stands over I-295 as one approaches or leaves the tool booths for the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The artist is sculptor Charles C. Parks of Wilmington, DE. He had crafted two earlier massive statues of Mary which were displayed in Wilmington before being shipped to Santa Clara, California and Chicago.

The faithful in Delaware wanted a similar statue of their own and in 1999 began a fund raising effort inspired by prayers and the recitation of more than 500,000 rosaries. When the statue was commissioned, it was requested that this statue represent Mary as she appears in her miraculous visits in Medjugorje, former Yugoslavia since 1981. In her appearances in Medjugorje, Mary offers messages for peace in the world, and refers to herself as the "Queen of Peace". For more information about the Medjugorje visitations: (visit link)

The commissioned statue was completed in stages as donations accumulated, and was dedicated on May 26, 2007. The statue stands on the grounds of Holy Spirit Parish at 12 Winder Road, New Castle, Delaware 19720, and is open to the public for visits.

The statue is not solid stainless steel, but it constructed of strips of steel shaped and welded together. It gives the impression of "lightness" rather than bulk when one approaches. In the small spaces between the sheets of steel, visitors have left rosaries and bits of folded paper, likely signifying prayers. Roman Catholics do not worship Mary but believe that she can be an intercessor for one's prayer intentions to her Son.
