James Earl Fraser, a celebrated American sculptor, was commissioned by the bank to create a sculpture to commemorate their 230 employees who died serving in WWI.
The statue is said to be modeled after Wynn Bagnall, a Bank of Montreal who won the Military Cross for conspicuous bravery in 1918. He survived the War.
