Commissioned in 1963, Ffestiniog Power Station was the UK's first major pumped storage power facility.

HEP power is generated by the water flowing from Llyn Stwlan to the bottom reservoir. Water is captured in Tan-y-Grisiau (bottom reservoir) and pumped back to Llyn Stwlan, usually overnight, to complete the cycle.

The Ffestiniog pumped storage scheme which dominates this character area was the first such in Britain: work began in 1957 and was completed in 1963. The upper reservoir was formed by enlarging Llyn Stwlan by a concreate dam, and the lower (1033ft below) was created by damming the Afon Ystradau near the satellite village of Tan-y-Grisiau. Two vertical shaftes inside Moelwyn link the two to allow the system to work.

More information on the power generation scheme can be found at:

The exact date the dam was constructed is not mentioned on the web site but it would have been between 1957 and 1963.
