In the year 1915 eight hundred and fifty sepoys of the the 5th Native Light Infantry mutinied against their British commanders in the cause of an independent India. The mutiny caught the British authorities, already distracted by WW1 raging in Europe, of guard. A week was required to crush the rebellion. Forty seven of the sepoys were executed, others deported or imprisoned. In the aftermath of the revolt the British authorities instituted internal security changes which seem to have alienated the Indian residents of Singapore.
